Fractal Design home server – NAS – mediaplayer project

Hi guys,

Soon I’ll be starting on my own custom build:

  • Home server
  • NAS
  • Mediaplayer

all in one single machine. I’ve already chosen the case : the Fractal Design Array R2 Mini ITX NAS Case with 300W SFX PSU.

It’s able to hold up to 6 x 3.5″ HDDs and 1 x 2.5″ HDD. To start it off I’ll be re-using some old drives but they will soon be replaced with all 2TB or 3TB Green Technology HDDs.

I’m still having some doubts on the motherboard and how much and which RAM memory I’ll be using.

The 6 x 3.5″ HDD slots will be used for the NAS/file server part of the system. The operating system will be installed on a 320GB 2.5″ HDD.

It will probarbly be a stripped down version of  Windows 7 Ultimate that I’ll be running on it (but still having some doubts about that too. Might be a linux distro instead, but I’m not sure).

For the home server part I’ll be installing a:

  • Webserver (from USBWebserver.com)
  • Teamspeak 3 server for “VOIP”
  • Jdownloader “server” with webpanel and remote control enabled
  • OpenSSH for windows
  • FTP-server (from FileZilla-project.org)

For the mediaplayer part I’m thinking about these 2:

  • XBMC with a custom made theme (by myself)
  • Boxee again with a custom theme

Without the drives I think I’ll be spending like a €350 on the hardware

If any of you guys have any suggestions or thoughts, please leave a comment.

    Nice case :-)

As you know I have the Define R2, which is superb :)
Nice finish, clean look and low noise thanks to dampening material :p

I’ll keep this post in mind and check back regularly !

    Cheerio ! DM
